‘Ambitious’ UK plans for electric vehicles welcomed – with reservations

ITEM team member Professor Tim Schwanen is quoted in an article in The Guardian on Government plans to support the transition to automotive electrification. Whilst he notes that electric vehicles are part of the solution to decarbonise transport and reduce air pollution, they are neither zero emission in lifecycle terms, nor will they solve all the other problems of car use. Drawing on the ITEM research, Schwanen also points out various inequities in EV uptake and future uptake that need to be addressed, the role that other types of electric transport, such as e-bikes and e-scooters, might play, and the need for a more holistic view of transport decarbonisation beyond electrification.
